As we continue to uplift Linda Mabalot’s legacy, we are cognizant of the importance of community documentation and how we use media to uplift our communities. Visual Communications (VC) invites you to experience the “Sounds of Little Tokyo”. As part of our Linda Visions programming, “Sounds of Little Tokyo” is an audio workshop that will teach you the basic skills needed for recording audio. This workshop will teach participants about the different types of microphones, how to effectively use their smartphones for recording audio, and factors to consider to achieve clean and high-quality audio recordings.

Whether you are a beginner or have some experience, this workshop will provide you with the essential skills and knowledge required to effectively record clean audio. This workshop is open to the public and completely free!

During the workshop, you will learn:

1. Introduction to Audio Recording

  • Understanding the significance of audio in storytelling and capturing the essence of a place.

  • Overview of various applications of audio recording, from documentaries to podcasts.

2. Types of Microphones

  • Exploring different types of microphones commonly used in audio recording.

  • Discussing their characteristics and when to use specific types for optimal results.

  • Demonstrating microphone placement techniques for different audio sources.

3. Smartphones for Audio Recording

  • Utilizing smartphones as a convenient tool for capturing audio.

  • Discussing available recording apps and their features.

  • Sharing tips and techniques for maximizing the quality of audio recordings using smartphones.

4. Obtaining Clean Audio

  • Identifying common obstacles to achieving clean audio recordings.

  • Demonstrating techniques to minimize background noise and interference.

  • Discussing the importance of proper microphone placement, wind protection, and soundproofing.

5. Field Recording in Little Tokyo

  • Participants will capture the unique sounds of the neighborhood using the skills and techniques learned during the workshop.
